8 Helpful Tips to make Moving to your Dream Home a Lot Easier

Young Family on Front Porch

Moving from one home to another is a lot of work, but it’s only as stressful as you allow it to be. There are plenty of things you can to make the process as painless as possible… but not if you procrastinate or, worse, don’t have a plan.

Here, then, are eight things you can do to make moving out of your house an exciting and not agonizing experience.

  1. Know what to take, and what not to take. First and foremost, get your stuff sorted. Don’t pack every item without considering if you’re going to use them or not. It’s not only time-wasting, it’s also expensive, especially if you employ movers that charge according to the weight of the haul. Look at everything you own and set aside the ones you don’t need. Donate discarded items to charity or simply throw them away.
  2. Keep items in storage. Stuff you don’t want to give or throw away, you can put in storage. If your new home can’t accommodate all your stuff – books, assorted collections, heirloom furniture, decorations— or if there’s simply too much to transport, you may have to rent temporary storage space. Here’s when planning ahead works in your favor because storage facilities often need to be booked weeks in advance.
  3. Collect boxes from grocery stores before the move. If you want to save on moving supplies, hit the local supermarkets and warehouse stores to ask for boxes you can use to pack your things.
  4. Load boxes containing the most used items last. It helps to arrange items according to need. This way, you’ll know what goes into the truck first and what goes last. The items that you need to use immediately should be loaded last so they’re the first ones off the truck when you reach your new home.
  5. Pack valuable items yourself. Pack items of value yourself. Whether sentimental or actual, valuable items such as a family heirloom or expensive jewelry should be handled and kept with you.
  6. Call the utility companies. Once you determine the date of your move, call the utility companies to schedule the cancellation of your service or set up a service switch. This must be done if your home already has a new owner and if you’re moving to a newly built or previously vacant property. If you’re moving to a completely different locale, you may need to call the local utilities provider to reestablish service in your new home.
  7. Protect your home from moving-day damage. During a move, it’s easy for doors, door frames, and floors to get nicked, scratched, dented, and chipped. Some movers offer home protection services. Ask about this before signing the contract.
  8. Imagine living in your new home. Moving can be a stressful, especially if your home holds significant sentimental value. To ease the pain, it may help to imagine yourself already living in your new home. Think of all the exciting things you can potentially do there. And make sure to unpack and organize your things as quickly as you can. The sooner you do so, the sooner your new house feels like home.
